FFO: Sundara Karma, Swim Deep, Rebel Westerns, Peace
Spilt Milk Society are a 5 piece band making a name for themselves in The Midlands creating shimmering, anthemic indie pop. Starting out at house parties and small venues, they have worked their way up to headline venues in Birmingham, such as The Sunflower Lounge, the O2 Institute and The O2 Academy 3, and have accumulated over 15,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
Following the release of Voices in March, Spilt Milk Society are back with their latest single She Tastes Like Summer. She might taste like summer, but this track sounds like summer. On my first listen I immediately felt like it was something reminiscent of Swim Deep’s 2013 debut album Where The Heaven Are We, which boasted tracks like King City. I get the same warm, glowy feeling from Spilt Milk Society as I did with that album from Swim Deep and I’m swarmed with nostalgia. The vocals are captivating and rich, and this is definitely a track for your summer playlists. The whole song is a representation of a kiss between two people in love. It’s starts and ends slower in tempo and in feel to depict the build up and
come down from the kiss contrasting with the upbeat, poppy middle section designed to bring
feel-good summer sensations. The twist is in the final lyrics ‘summer and love fade away’, showing
how love can be fleeting and last only for a moment – the constant use of “she” suggests that
the girl is unknown and hints that maybe the only moment the two people shared together was that kiss.
Gold-tinted and sunny, She Tastes Like Summer is fantastic. Spilt Milk Society have a FREE headline gig in London coming up on the 17th August which you should get yourself along to if you can, I know it’ll be sensational. They’re also supporting the wonderful TENDER in Birmingham in September. Spilt Milk Society’s winning cocktail of glittery indie-pop and catchy, danceable grooves make them a band to watch out for.
